No One Raises a Child Alone
“It takes a village to raise a child.”
– African Proverb
There’s an old African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” It sounds comforting — like support will simply appear once you become a parent.
But what happens when it doesn’t?
When you’ve made the effort — joined the groups, attended school events, tried to start conversations — and it still feels like connection is out of reach?
It’s easy to assume it’s something you’re doing wrong. But often, it’s not that simple.
Modern life has quietly reshaped the “village” we used to depend on. We live in communities that are physically close but emotionally distant. Everyone’s busy, schedules rarely align, and social energy is running low. The kind of organic support that used to grow naturally now takes intentional effort — and even then, it can fall flat.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Many parents are navigating the same invisible gap — wanting community but finding that it’s harder to build than anyone admits.
So maybe the question isn’t “Where is my village?” but “What does a village look like now?”
Sometimes it’s smaller than we expect.
It might be the teacher who greets your child warmly each morning. Or another parent who shares a quick smile at pickup time. Or the friend you text once a month, but always pick up right where you left off.
These moments may not look like the village we pictured, but they still count.contribution.
If you’re in this season, a few gentle steps can help:
1. Redefine what connection means
A village isn’t always a large circle — sometimes it’s two or three genuine relationships that grow slowly.
2. Start where you already are
You don’t need to create a new community from scratch; small, consistent gestures within your daily routine often open quiet doors.
3. Be patient with the process
Connection takes time, and it doesn’t always unfold in obvious ways.
The truth is, the village may not always arrive on its own.
But that doesn’t mean it can’t exist — it just means we might build it differently now: intentionally, patiently, one real moment at a time.
