Good Vibes Are Meant To Be Felt

"Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies."

— John Milton

As we come to the end of our Good Vibes series, I want to say something that I think can get quietly lost in the middle of a busy summer.

You are allowed to actually enjoy this.

Not just get through it. Not just keep everyone fed, entertained, sunscreened, emotionally supported, and reasonably ready for whatever September brings. Not just hold everything together long enough to look back and say, “Well, we survived.”

You are allowed to enjoy it.

To let the good parts land. To feel the warmth of the season while you are still standing inside it. To be part of the summer, not only the person managing it from the side.

I know that sounds obvious. But I have spoken with enough parents over the years to know that many of us become very good at being present for everyone else’s experience of a season and not quite present for our own.

We plan the days. We navigate the moods. We remember the snacks. We keep the household moving. We notice whether the children are having fun, whether the day is working, whether everyone is okay.

And somewhere in the middle of all that care, the weeks can slip by.

We were there, of course. But we were not quite in it.

So for this final week, I want to turn the attention gently back to you. Not as another thing to improve. Not as another thing to get right. But as a reminder that your joy matters too.

Most of us, without realising it, have a quiet rule about enjoyment.

We will enjoy things once everything is sorted.

Once the to-do list is shorter. Once the children are getting along better. Once the house is tidier. Once the emails are answered. Once we have done enough to deserve a proper rest.

Once.

But the “sorted enough” moment has a way of never quite arriving. There is always one more thing to do, answer, tidy, plan, pack, cook, organise, or think about. And so enjoyment gets deferred, day after day, into a future that keeps moving just ahead of us.

Summer offers us a beautiful invitation to notice that pattern and gently interrupt it.

Because summer, more than any other season, actually gives you the conditions. The slower mornings. The evenings that last. The unscheduled afternoons with no particular agenda. The chance to be in your own life rather than just running it.

The question is whether you let yourself take the invitation.

Children absorb the emotional atmosphere of the adults around them long before they can explain it.

They do not only experience summer through their own eyes. They experience it through ours too.

They notice when we laugh at the genuinely funny thing.

When we sit outside for ten minutes doing nothing because the evening is beautiful and we can.

When we say, “This is a good day,” and actually mean it.

When we join the silly game without one eye on the next task.

That does something…and it gives children permission.

It tells them that ordinary days can be enjoyed. That rest does not have to be earned through exhaustion. That joy does not need everything to be perfect before it is allowed to arrive.

A child who grows up around adults who can enjoy real, imperfect life learns something deeply hopeful.

They learn that joy is available. Not only on holidays. Not only when plans go smoothly. Not only when everyone behaves beautifully and the house looks presentable.

Joy can live in an ordinary Saturday afternoon.

It can live in the garden game, the shared joke, the slow breakfast, the car conversation, the moment everyone settles, the small bit of summer that almost passed unnoticed.

That is a deeply optimistic thing for a child to grow up believing. And often, it begins with watching us.

Good vibes are the small, honest decisions to notice what is good, to let joy have room, and to allow ourselves to be part of the life we are working so hard to care for.
